Coastal Tea Tree Essential Oil 10mL
Coastal Tea Tree is distilled from Leptospermum laevigatum, a wind-shaped shrub of the Tasmanian coast. Despite the name it is a Leptospermum, not a Melaleuca, so it is a different genus from the tea tree everyone knows. It smells nothing like it either: sweet and earthy with soft citrus and light wood, rather than sharp and medicinal.

Coastal Tea Tree is steam distilled from the leaves and branchlets of Leptospermum laevigatum. The Leptospermum genus is where manuka also sits, and it is a different genus from Melaleuca alternifolia, the plant sold as tea tree. Zea's is grown on Flinders Island in Bass Strait, on Pyemmairrener land, the same country the Kunzea comes from.
From bush to bottle
Leptospermum laevigatum grows right at the front of the dunes, taking the full force of the salt wind off Bass Strait. Plants in that position grow low, dense and hard, which is the form the species is known for. It wants poor sandy soil and takes no fertiliser.
The harvest takes the leaves and the green branchlets together, which is where the oil sits. The woody older growth is left behind. Cut this way the shrub reshoots, so the same stand keeps producing.
Steam passes through the plant material, the volatile oil lifts with it, and the two are condensed and separated. Nothing is added and nothing is taken out. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis.
The name tea tree has been attached to at least three unrelated things. The oil sold as tea tree is Melaleuca alternifolia. Manuka is Leptospermum scoparium. Coastal Tea Tree is Leptospermum laevigatum. They share a family, Myrtaceae, and very little else.
The name itself comes from early European arrivals steeping the leaves of coastal Leptospermum as a tea substitute, which is how the label ended up spread across several genera. If you are expecting the sharp medicinal hit of Melaleuca alternifolia, this is not that oil. It is sweeter, earthier and considerably easier to live with in a diffuser.
Quality and testing
Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis. The full constituent breakdown is held on the batch certificate rather than published here, because the ranges shift with each season and harvest.
Flinders Island sits in Bass Strait off the north-east tip of Tasmania, on Pyemmairrener land. It is the same island country that produces Zea's Kunzea. Coastal Tea Tree grows right at the dune front there, taking salt wind year round, and the plants grow low and dense because of it.

Ways to use it
3 to 6 drops in a diffuser or oil burner. The simplest way in.
Coastal Tea Tree blends with Australian natives. Kunzea, Lavender, Lemon Ironbark and Black Spruce all work.
One or two drops in a carrier oil such as jojoba. Patch test first.
One drop inhaled from a tissue when you want the aroma on the move.
A few drops in water instead of a synthetic air freshener.
Well dispersed in a carrier or with bath salts, never neat on water.
A few drops in a homemade surface spray as a fresh deodoriser.
Combine it with Kunzea in a diffuser for two oils from the same island.

No. Tea tree oil is Melaleuca alternifolia. This is Leptospermum laevigatum, a different genus entirely. They share the Myrtaceae family and the common name, and not much else.
Manuka is Leptospermum scoparium, so it is the same genus as Coastal Tea Tree but a different species. Manuka is warmer and heavier; Coastal Tea Tree is sweeter and lighter.
No. Never apply an undiluted essential oil and never take one internally. Dilute in a carrier oil first, and patch test.
