This is Lavandula angustifolia, the species usually called true lavender or English lavender, steam distilled from the flower head. It is not lavandin, the higher-yielding hybrid that supplies a great deal of the world's cheap lavender oil. Zea's is grown at Margate in southern Tasmania, on Neunome land.
From bush to bottle
Lavandula angustifolia is a Mediterranean plant that performs best where summers are warm but nights stay cool. Southern Tasmania sits at a latitude that gives it exactly that, which is why the island has become one of the few places outside Europe with a genuine reputation for the crop.
Timing is the whole game with lavender. Cut too early and the oil is thin; too late and it coarsens. The harvest goes through at peak flowering and takes the flower head, not the leaf or stem, which is where the finer aromatic compounds sit.
Steam passes through the harvested flower, lifts the volatile oil, and the two are condensed and separated. Nothing is added afterwards and nothing is blended in. Every batch is GC/MS tested and carries a certificate of analysis.
A large share of the lavender oil on the market is not Lavandula angustifolia at all. It is lavandin, Lavandula x intermedia, a hybrid of true lavender and spike lavender. Lavandin yields far more oil per hectare and is correspondingly cheaper, which is why it dominates on price.
It also smells different. Lavandin carries noticeably more camphor, which gives it a sharper, more medicinal edge, and it is the reason a lot of people say they dislike lavender. True lavender is softer, sweeter and more floral. Both are legitimately sold as lavender oil, so the botanical name on the label is the only reliable way to tell which one you are buying. This one is Lavandula angustifolia.
